What is a PET/CT scan?
At PET/CT Imaging of San Jose, we use cutting-edge technology to provide highly detailed and accurate scans. Our Siemens Biograph 64/40 scanner delivers crystal-clear images of every organ with low doses of radioisotopes, ensuring maximum speed and patient comfort.
We lead the region in advanced imaging options, offering specialized radioisotopes like Axumin® for detecting suspected prostate cancer recurrence, FDG and Ga-68 Dotatate NETSPOT® for diagnosing neuroendocrine tumors, and more.

Advanced PET/CT Technology
A PET/CT scan combines two powerful imaging techniques:
- Positron Emission Tomography (PET): Shows how your organs and tissues function.
- Computed Tomography (CT): Provides detailed images of anatomy like blood vessels, lymph nodes, and organs.
When combined, these images give doctors a comprehensive view that helps detect cancer, heart conditions, neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s, and other central nervous system issues.
What to Expect During Your PET/CT Exam
Before your scan, you’ll receive a small injection of a radioactive tracer. You’ll rest comfortably for about 60 minutes while the tracer moves through your body. Then, your scan will take 20–45 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
After your exam, drinking plenty of water helps flush the tracer from your system. PET/CT scans are low risk, and you can typically resume normal activities immediately. If you’re breastfeeding or around young children, please discuss precautions with our technologists.

PET/CT can help
- PET/CT scans can:
- Assess blood flow and damage from heart attacks
- Evaluate brain abnormalities such as tumors, memory issues, seizures, and neurological disorders
- Detect the size, location, and spread of cancer
- Guide treatment decisions and monitor therapy effectiveness
- Identify cancer recurrence early
What is a diagnostic CT Scan?
A CT scan uses X-rays and computer technology to create detailed images of bones, organs, and blood vessels. It helps doctors diagnose injuries, cancers, fractures, and guide medical procedures. The scan is painless and usually only takes a few minutes. Some patients may receive an intravenous or oral contrast agent to enhance image clarity. Radiologists interpret these images to provide accurate diagnoses.
